Kapurthala is the strangest town in Punjab. Maharaja Jagatjit Singh, ruler of the princely state 1877-1949, was obsessed with Paris and spent decades building a small city in the style of Versailles and the Louis quarters. The Jagatjit Palace (now Sainik School — you can visit the exterior and some interiors), the Moorish Mosque modeled on Marrakesh's Koutoubia, and the Elysée-style Villa Buona Vista are all within a 3km central grid.

The town is small, sleepy, and gets almost no international tourism — which is the point. Half a day covers the palace exterior, the mosque, the Panch Mandir, and the state gurudwara. Skip the outer industrial area. Come as a day trip from Jalandhar (20km) or Amritsar (75km). If you’re a heritage or architecture person, Kapurthala is the most rewarding day trip in Punjab that no one else is doing.

Where to stay in Kapurthala

Stay in Jalandhar (20km) and day-trip in — Kapurthala's own hotels are limited to $25-40 basic guesthouses on the Jalandhar Road. There's no international-standard hotel. If you must stay overnight, the Punjab Tourism Development Corporation guesthouse near the Jagatjit Palace is the most reliable at $30-45. Avoid the bus-stand lodges. The best move is Jalandhar Model Town for lodging, and hire a taxi for the Kapurthala day.

Jagatjit Palace (Sainik School)
Central Kapurthala, on Palace Road. Now a Sainik (military) school — exteriors free to view, interior visits sometimes possible via school office (call ahead, weekdays only). The Durbar Hall replica of Versailles is the highlight.
Moorish Mosque
Old town, near the state gurudwara. Open dawn to dusk, free entry. Modeled on the Koutoubia in Marrakesh — one of the most unusual mosques in North India. Interior tile work is intact; caretaker will unlock the prayer hall if you ask politely.
Panch Mandir
Central town near the bus stand. Five-shrine Hindu temple complex built by the maharaja for his mother. Open 6am-8pm, free entry. Modest but historically interesting — pre-dates most of the French-style buildings.
Villa Buona Vista and Elysée Palace
Scattered around central Kapurthala. Some are now government offices, some private — you view exteriors only. A local rickshaw driver ($8 for a half-day tour) can circuit all the surviving buildings in 3 hours with commentary.

Start at Jagatjit Palace main gate (Sainik School), walk west to the Moorish Mosque, north to Panch Mandir, then via the central Chowk to Villa Buona Vista's exterior gates. End at the state gurudwara for langar. Best 8-11am before the sun is punishing.

Getting there & around Kapurthala

No airport, no major railway. Kapurthala railway station has passenger trains to Jalandhar and Amritsar but frequencies are limited. The realistic access is by road from Jalandhar (25 minutes, taxi $8-12, shared jeep $1) or Amritsar (1.5 hours, taxi $25-35). Inside town, cycle-rickshaws ($0.50) cover everything — the central heritage circuit is walkable if you don’t mind heat.

Can I go inside the Jagatjit Palace?
Partial access only, since it's now Sainik School. The school office (open weekdays 9am-4pm) sometimes permits guided access to the Durbar Hall for heritage visitors — carry ID, expect to wait. Weekends and school holidays no interior access. Exteriors and gardens are always viewable from the road.
Is Kapurthala worth a full day?
Half a day is the honest answer. Arrive Jalandhar by 8am, taxi to Kapurthala for 9am, cover the four main sites by 1pm, lunch, return Jalandhar by 3pm. Trying to stretch it to a full day means padding with a mediocre museum and a walk through generic markets.
