Jalandhar makes cricket bats, footballs, and hockey sticks that end up in Wimbledon and Old Trafford. The Basti Sheikh and Sports Complex Road factories will let you tour if you call ahead. It's also the center of the Doaba region — every second family has someone in Brampton, Southall, or Melbourne, and it shows in the SUV density and the sheer scale of the wedding halls along the NH-1 bypass.
The old city around Rainak Bazaar is grubby, chaotic, and great for street food — chole bhature at Lovely Sweets (Model Town), tikkis at the Company Bagh gate. Model Town and Urban Estate are the leafy money districts. Skip the Devi Talab Mandir if you’ve already seen the Golden Temple; go to the Jang-e-Azadi memorial on Kartarpur Road instead — a serious, well-curated museum on Punjab's role in the freedom struggle.
Model Town and the area around Nakodar Road are the safe mid-range picks — $40-70 for a decent business hotel, walking distance to restaurants. GT Road hotels are cheaper ($25-40) but the truck traffic never stops. Avoid the pockets right next to the railway station unless you have an early train — they’re grimy and overpriced for what you get. The newer Urban Estate developments have boutique stays around $60-90 with pools, useful in the May-June heat.
Start at Model Town Market main gate, walk the tree-lined inner circle past the bungalows built by NRIs in the 1970s, cross to Guru Gobind Singh Stadium for the evening joggers, then back via Company Bagh (Nehru Garden) for chaat at the entrance.
All walking routesJalandhar has no airport — arrive at Amritsar (85km, 90-minute drive) or Chandigarh (150km, 2.5 hours). Jalandhar City junction is on the main Delhi-Amritsar line; Shatabdi and Vande Bharat stop here. Inside the city, autos and Ola work well; expect $1-3 for most trips. The DMU commuter trains to Amritsar and Ludhiana are cheap ($0.50) but slow.
