Gurdaspur is the district headquarters of Punjab's northernmost district (excluding Pathankot which was carved out separately). The town itself is small and administrative — courts, a district hospital, and a working-class bazaar. The interest is what's around it: Dera Baba Nanak (30km west) for the Kartarpur Corridor, the Shivalik-foothill villages toward Pathankot, and the Ravi river valley.

Historically the district saw heavy Partition violence — Gurdaspur was one of the districts whose award to India (rather than Pakistan) was contested and shaped the final Radcliffe Line. The Nehru Park in the town center and a few colonial-era administrative buildings survive. Come here on the way from Amritsar to Pathankot or as a Kartarpur Corridor base. Not a destination on its own.

Where to stay in Gurdaspur

Basic hotels only — $25-50 on the Pathankot road and near the bus stand. No chains or boutique options. Gurdaspur District PWD guesthouse ($20-30) is a reliable option if available. Pathankot (35km, 45 minutes) or Amritsar (75km, 1.5 hours) both have better hotel infrastructure. For a Kartarpur Corridor early morning, Batala (30km, 45 minutes) or Dera Baba Nanak itself is closer.

Things to do in Gurdaspur

Dera Baba Nanak Kartarpur Terminal
30km west of Gurdaspur. Indian-side terminal for the corridor to Pakistan. Requires online permit 4 days in advance. Passport required, Indian nationals only. Same-day return trip to Kartarpur Sahib in Pakistan — the site where Guru Nanak spent his last 18 years.
Mukteshwar Mahadev cave temple
45km northeast toward Pathankot. Ancient cave temple with rock-cut figures. Free entry, open 6am-8pm. Requires a car; combines with a Pathankot loop or Ranjit Sagar Dam.
Ravi river drive
West and north of Gurdaspur, the Ravi river forms the international border. Hired car $25 half day. Village lanes, fields, occasional BSF checkpoints (ID required). Not a formal route; the pleasure is in the empty roads.
Gurudwara Chola Sahib
In Dera Baba Nanak. Houses a chola (robe) said to have been worn by Guru Nanak, gifted to him by a Muslim disciple. Open 5am-9pm, free entry, langar. A quieter, deeper stop than the Kartarpur Corridor terminal itself.
Signature walk · 2 km
Dera Baba Nanak Heritage Walk

In Dera Baba Nanak (not Gurdaspur town): start at Gurudwara Chola Sahib, walk east to the Kartarpur Corridor terminal viewing point, cross to the Ravi riverbank promenade, and back via the small bazaar for langar or lassi. Best 5-8am to catch the corridor's morning departure atmosphere.

No airport — Amritsar IXA 75km southwest (1.5 hours, $30-40). Gurdaspur railway station is on the Amritsar-Pathankot line — passenger trains and some through-expresses. Buses every 30 minutes from Amritsar ($2.50, 2 hours) and Pathankot ($1.50, 1 hour). Inside town, cycle-rickshaws ($0.30) and autos ($1) cover everything. Good to know

Can foreigners visit Kartarpur Corridor?
Currently the corridor is open only to Indian nationals (with Indian passport) and Overseas Citizens of India (OCI). Foreign nationals should apply for a Pakistan visa and travel via Wagah-Attari or Lahore airport to visit Kartarpur Sahib on the Pakistan side directly.
How far is Gurdaspur from Amritsar?
75km northeast, about 1.5 hours by road or 2 hours by passenger train. It's a normal district town — not a destination in its own right, but the base for Dera Baba Nanak (Kartarpur Corridor) and a stop on the Amritsar-Pathankot-Dharamshala route.
