When to visit Punjab

Punjab's climate swings 40+ degrees between winter mornings and summer afternoons; the ideal window is 4 months long, November through February.

Peak: November-February

This is the season. Daytime highs of 15-22°C, cool nights, clear skies, and mustard fields in full yellow bloom by January. Every outdoor sight — Wagah, Sukhna Lake, gurdwara parikramas — is comfortable. Downside: December and January mornings can hit 3-5°C with dense fog that delays trains and flights. Pack a jacket. Hotel rates rise 30-50% versus off-season.

Festival calendar

Lohri (Jan 13) brings bonfires in every colony. Basant Panchami (late January/early February) fills the sky with kites. Hola Mohalla (day after Holi, March) is the Sikh warrior festival at Anandpur Sahib — extraordinary but very crowded. Baisakhi (April 13-14) marks the harvest and Khalsa foundation, with massive gatherings at the Golden Temple. Book accommodation 6-8 weeks ahead for any of these.

Shoulder and low seasons

March and October are pleasant, 25-32°C, and cheaper. April-June is punishing — Amritsar regularly hits 44-46°C. Monsoon (July-mid-September) is short and moderate here versus other Indian states; roads flood briefly but everything runs. Avoid May-June unless you’re focused on indoor sights and can tolerate the heat.

Peak bloom is mid-January to mid-February. Drive any rural road between Amritsar, Tarn Taran, or Ferozepur for the classic yellow-field photos.
How bad is Punjab fog in December?
Severe. Amritsar airport regularly delays or diverts flights 3-6 hours in late December through mid-January. Build buffer days if flying at that time.
Can I visit during Baisakhi?
Yes, and it's spectacular at the Golden Temple, but expect crowds of 100,000+ and 3x normal hotel rates. Book at least 2 months ahead.
Is monsoon a bad time?
Not particularly — Punjab gets less rain than Kerala or Mumbai. Skies are green, prices drop, and sights are quiet. Some rural roads flood briefly.
