Best sunset spots in Punjab

6 places to watch the sun drop across the state, from the Golden Temple's marble reflection to the Shivalik ridgeline behind Chandigarh.

Amritsar

The Golden Temple parikrama at sunset is the top pick — the gold reflects doubly in the sarovar as lights come on around 6pm (winter) or 7pm (summer). The marble stays warm underfoot; walk clockwise as the queue for the Harmandir Sahib bridge shortens. Second option: the Gobindgarh Fort ramparts on the west side of the walled city, with the fort's evening light show starting shortly after.

Wagah border

The Attari-Wagah Beating Retreat ceremony ends with the flags coming down exactly at sunset, engineered by both sides. The sky over the Pakistani side turns pink and orange while soldiers march. Get in the front rows of the foreign-tourist stand for the best view. It's a spectacle rather than a quiet moment, but the sunset framing is unforgettable.

Chandigarh

Sukhna Lake's north-eastern promenade — walk from the Boat Club towards the Rock Garden as the Shivalik hills silhouette behind. Fewer crowds than the south side. Rooftop drinks at Whistling Duck in Sector 26 or the JW Marriott's terrace in Sector 35 give the same sunset with a cocktail in hand. Elante Mall's terrace has decent city-facing views.

Rural Punjab

January-February: any village road at sunset with mustard fields in full bloom — yellow foreground, orange sky. Ferozepur district and the road between Amritsar and Tarn Taran are photographers' favorites. Ask a local for permission before stepping into a field, and never trample crops. In Anandpur Sahib, the ridge behind Takht Keshgarh Sahib offers a Shivalik-foothill sunset.

Questions, answered

What time is sunset in Punjab?
Winter (December-January) sunset is around 5:30-5:45pm. Summer (May-July) sunset is 7:15-7:30pm. Adjust arrival at Wagah accordingly — the ceremony starts 45 minutes before sundown.
Do I need a tripod at the Golden Temple?
Not necessary for phone photos. Professional cameras and tripods require a permit from the SGPC information office. Handheld shots at dusk work well.
Is Sukhna Lake safe at sunset?
Yes — the promenade is well-lit and busy with joggers and families until 8-9pm. Stay on the main paths.
Where's the best mustard-field sunset?
Rural roads in Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, or the villages around Sultanpur Lodhi during January-February. Any secondary road off NH54 will show the yellow-bloom in season.
