Punjab in 3 days on a budget

Three days in Punjab under $80 total, using free pilgrim housing, the Shatabdi train chair car, and dhaba meals under $3.

Day 1: Amritsar for free

Arrive Amritsar Junction and walk 15 minutes to Sri Guru Ram Das Niwas beside the Golden Temple. Foreign-tourist dorms are free (donation encouraged, $2-3 is fair) with 3-night stays allowed. Eat all three meals in the langar hall at zero cost. Fill your afternoon with Jallianwala Bagh (free) and the parikrama at night when marble is lit and crowds thin. Total spend: about $5 including ID photos and a padlock.

Day 2: Wagah and old city

Shared jeeps to Attari leave from near the Golden Temple for $2 return. Beating Retreat is free. Morning, walk the walled city: Hall Bazaar, Katra Jaimal Singh, and the Town Hall Partition Museum ($3.50, worth it). Lunch at Kesar Da Dhaba where a full thali is $3.50. Evening chai and jalebi at Gurdas Ram Jalebi Wala in Chowk Regent Cinema for under $1.

Day 3: Chandigarh on the cheap

Take the 6am Amritsar-Chandigarh Intercity Express, second-sitting $3. In Chandigarh use the CTU local bus network (flat $0.15) to Rock Garden ($0.50 entry) and Sukhna Lake (free). Sleep in Sector 22's Panchayat Bhawan dorm for $8 or head straight to the airport for a late flight. Total 3-day spend easily under $80 including transport.

Questions, answered

Can foreigners really sleep at the Golden Temple for free?
Yes. Passport needed at the Niwas reception. Dorms are basic, single-sex, with a shared bathroom and a fan. Bring your own towel.
Is the langar food safe?
Very. It's cooked in massive scrubbed vessels and served to lakhs daily. The dal, roti, and kheer are cooked hot and eaten hot. Skip the water in the hall and refill your bottle outside.
What's the cheapest way from the airport?
Amritsar airport to Golden Temple is 11 km. The prepaid taxi counter charges $6; a shared auto to the bus stand then rickshaw is $2.
Do I need to tip in the langar?
No. If you want to give back, volunteer for an hour washing dishes or serving rotis. Donation boxes exist but aren’t expected.
