Day trip to Anandpur Sahib from Punjab

The birthplace of the Khalsa sits 90 km north of Chandigarh in the Shivalik foothills, home to Moshe Safdie's spectacular Virasat-e-Khalsa museum.

Getting there

From Chandigarh, drive NH205 for 2 hours via Kiratpur. From Amritsar it's 4 hours via Jalandhar and Rupnagar — long, but doable if you leave by 6am. Trains are slow; Anandpur Sahib station only connects locally. A car with driver from Chandigarh runs about $50 for the day.

The main sights

Takht Sri Keshgarh Sahib is one of the five Sikh takhts, marking where Guru Gobind Singh founded the Khalsa in 1699. Entry free, head covered, phones off. The nearby Virasat-e-Khalsa museum, designed by Moshe Safdie, is a stunning stone-and-steel complex telling 500 years of Sikh history across 15 galleries. Entry free, closed Mondays, allow 2-3 hours. Anandgarh Fort and Lohgarh Fort are shorter stops within town.

When to time it

Hola Mohalla, the day after Holi (March), turns the town into a warrior festival with Nihang cavalry, mock battles, and 200,000 pilgrims. Extraordinary if you can handle the crush; overwhelming otherwise. Off-season (November-February) is calm, cool, and photogenic with the Shivaliks in the background. Avoid May-June when temperatures hit 44°C.

Is Anandpur Sahib doable as a day trip from Amritsar?
Tight but yes — 8 hours of driving round-trip leaves 4 hours on site. Sleeping over in Chandigarh and doing it from there is far more sensible.
Is the Virasat-e-Khalsa museum worth the drive?
Yes — Safdie's architecture alone justifies the trip. It's arguably North India's best modern museum and it's free.
Can non-Sikhs enter the takht?
Yes, all faiths welcome. Cover your head with the scarves provided at the entrance, remove shoes, and don’t point your feet at the guru granth sahib.
Is there food nearby?
Free langar at the gurdwara, plus small dhabas near the museum parking. For a proper meal, stop in Kiratpur or eat back in Chandigarh.
