Train wins
Vande Bharat Express, 5.5 hours, $12 chair car or $22 executive class. Departs New Delhi 8am, arrives Amritsar 1:30pm. Return leaves 3:15pm, arrives 8:45pm. Comfortable, on-time, and drops you 3km from the Golden Temple. Shatabdi is the older alternative at similar timing but slightly cheaper.

Drive or fly
Drive: 7–9 hours on the GT Road (NH-44), $80 for a hired car with driver, $60 in fuel and tolls if self-driving. Choose this only if you want to stop at Kurukshetra, Ambala, or Ludhiana en route. The road is expressway-standard now, but the truck traffic makes it tiring.
Fly: Delhi to Amritsar takes 75 minutes flight time, $50–90 depending on booking window, but 4 hours door-to-door with airports. Only worth it if you are connecting an international flight or coming from Mumbai/Bangalore. IndiGo runs 6 daily flights.
