1) Kasauli, 65km, 90 minutes — the Himachal hill station that gave the region its retirement-town vibe. Walk the Upper Mall, Sunset Point, and Christ Church. Best October–March. 2) Pinjore Gardens (Yadavindra), 22km, 40 minutes — Mughal terraced garden that runs at 30% of the crowds of Delhi's Nizamuddin equivalents, $1 entry.
3) Morni Hills, 45km, 90 minutes — Punjab-region's only real hill drive, twin lakes at the top, birding is superb January to March.
4) Anandpur Sahib, 85km, 2 hours — Virasat-e-Khalsa plus the takht plus a Shivalik hike, easily a full day. 5) Nalagarh Fort, 60km, 90 minutes — heritage fort-hotel with a lunch buffet at $18 that is worth the drive. 6) Pattiala, 70km, 90 minutes — the palace, Sheesh Mahal, and the moth bagh, best combined with an overnight rather than a rush.
Skip: Nahan (too far for what you get), Shimla (needs 2 nights minimum), Solan (thin on sights). Kasauli beats them all as a first day trip.
