Amritsar is not a polite city. It is loud, greasy, unbelievably generous, and it runs on ghee and faith. The old walled city around Hall Bazaar and Katra Ahluwalia is a knot of cycle-rickshaws, jalebi wallahs, and shops selling phulkari dupattas at prices that halve if you walk out once. At 9pm the Heritage Street pedestrian stretch leading to the Golden Temple is packed shoulder-to-shoulder with families eating kulfi, and the marble around the sarovar is still warm under bare feet.
Skip this city if you want quiet, wide pavements, or minibar wine. Come if you want to eat Kesar Da Dhaba's dal makhani at 10pm, queue 40 minutes for a paratha at Kesar Da Dhaba or Kulcha Land, and sit inside the Harmandir Sahib complex at 4am for the Palki Sahib. The Wagah border ceremony at sunset is the one overrated stop — it's a 90-minute bus circus, entertaining once, never again.
Stay inside a 10-minute walk of the Golden Temple — Heritage Street, Queen's Road, or the lanes off Town Hall. Mid-range heritage hotels around Ranjit Avenue run $50-90; budget guesthouses near Jallianwala Bagh sit at $18-30. Avoid anything advertised as 'near Golden Temple' that turns out to be 3km away in Ram Bagh — check the map yourself. The GT Road side is loud with truck horns all night; the lanes behind Saragarhi Memorial are quieter but harder for rickshaws to find at 11pm.
Start at the Town Hall clock tower, walk Heritage Street to the Golden Temple main entrance, circle the parkarma (outer walkway), exit east to Jallianwala Bagh, then cut through Katra Ahluwalia bazaar to Hall Bazaar for phulkari and papad, ending at Bharawan Da Dhaba for lunch.
All walking routesSri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport is 13km northwest — a prepaid taxi from the counter is $8-10, 25 minutes. Amritsar Junction railway station is 2km from the Golden Temple; auto-rickshaw is $1.50 fixed rate on the board. Inside the walled city, walking beats everything — the lanes are too narrow for cars, and cycle-rickshaws charge $1 for anywhere within the old town. Ola and Uber work but drivers refuse Heritage Street after 6pm.
